Enigma
Variations
Shots were
heard on a hidden Norwegian island, where the Nobel-Prize winner writer Abel
Znorko lives far away from the world. The solitude of the genius is disturbed
by the small town journalist, Erik Larsen, to whom he is somehow ready to give
an interview for the first time after so many years. But it turns out soon that
the reporter is not satisfied with cliché answers. Larsen decidedly tries to
find out, which is not unusual for journalists, who is this mysterious H. M., to
whom Znorko his novel ‘Unconfessed Love’ dedicated to… The report starts with
usual questions and reasoning but then stranger and stranger secrets are
unveiled about a love affair that was not ordinary at all.
The author of French origin, who graduated in philosophy about the metaphysics
of Diderot, is mainly known for his plays and screenplays. Nearly twenty of his
plays have been staged in more than thirty countries and he is the screenwriter
of four feature films, of which the Hungarian cinema-going audience could see Monsieur
Ibrahim and the Flowers of the Koran, which won the Audience Award at the
Venice Film Festival and The Libertine, which is about the life of Diderot.
At the French premiere of Enigma Variations the main role was played by Alain
Delon, and a TV film was made from it by
the Norwegian Kjetil Bang-Hansen in 2002 and by Volker Schlöndorff in 2005.
