Since the
laughing mask of comedy joined the frowning face symbolising tragedy, since
comedies are played we have laughed at the basic situation of the genre,
misunderstanding. We laugh when the rich is thought to be poor and when the
poor is thought to be rich. That a man is regarded to be a woman, a woman to be
a man, the lover to be indifferent, the indifferent to be a lover, the coward
to be a hero, the hero to be a coward, the smart to be stupid and the other way
round. Of course after lots of laughter everything gets to its place by the end
of the play and most of the time everyone accepts the truth happily. Ferenc Molnár’s geniality is shown the best that he
can twist even this thousand-year-old theatre tradition. First he shows the truth;
next he makes a misunderstanding out of it. Funnily the characters feel happier
from the lies and not the truth. The audience laughs as much but after leaving
the theatre maybe reflects more, the experience brings us further. Quite to the
ordinary life.
